AI 'lifeguard' could save young swimmers from drowning

THIS goes way beyond water wings. An AI system is learning to recognise the panicky movements people make when they are drowning. The idea is that the system could one day be used to save children's lives when there are no lifeguards around.

Ultrasonic systems at swimming pools can alert lifeguards if someone is underwater too long - but few pools have them and they are no help at unguarded river banks and beaches. So Ken Sakamura and colleagues at the University of Tokyo created an AI system which could, for example, activate a body-worn flotation bag in an emergency.

To train it, the team asked a lifeguard to wear a pressure sensor and mimic the behaviour of swimmers who get into difficulty: making rapid, flailing arm movements with their body vertical. The lifeguard generated a telltale pressure change profile that the system, based on neural network software, could reliably distinguish from normal swimming.

The team want to make the system more robust by training it using more volunteers, with an accelerometer added to the sensor pack. They will present their results at the International Conference on Consumer Electronics in Las Vegas, Nevada, on 12 January

SINCE the current Honda Civic was launched in 2006, we have witnessed the arrival of a host of fresh small-car rivals, not the least being the class-redefining talents of the current-generation Mazda3 and Volkswagen Golf.
It is no surprise, then, that Honda has delved into its toolbox this year to keep its Civic sedan competitive.
The big carrot is a safety upgrade, which brings it into line with the present state of small-car play. However, is the rest of the package still up to speed?

Civic sedan prices kick off at $22,990 (plus on-road and dealer costs) for the base VTi, or $25,290 for the auto version tested here.
That's on the high side for an entry-level small sedan and you don't really get much to show for it. Airconditioning, cruise control, power windows, CD/MP3 sound system with auxiliary input and keyless entry are standard. That's pretty much par for the course but you don't get a trip computer like you do in some base-model smallies.
The $26,690 VTi-L adds more gear and the $31,990 Sport gets a bigger engine.
There's also the $34,490 Hybrid for economy-minded types.
All models now come with curtain airbags and, with stability control mandatory since last year, the on-paper safety pitch is competitive. Not so its NCAP rating, which, at four stars, is inferior to the best small cars.
